About Our Snowmobile Tour of Leadville’s Historic Mining District

You’ll begin at Birdseye Outpost, which is located about 16 miles South of Copper Mountain Resort and situated at a breath-stealing altitude of 10,000 feet. Your guide will train you on the operation of your snowmobile before ascending Prospect Mountain, topping out at over 12,600 feet!

The tour starts out on our easier trails and you’ll have some playtime in the meadow so you can get fully comfortable with your snowmobile before you take on the steep climbs and fresh powder around Prospect Mountain.

The  Colorado Mining Belt was the most productive silver mining district in the state. Cumulative production was 240 million troy ounces of silver, 3 million troy ounces of gold, 987 million tonnes of lead, 712 million tonnes of zinc, and 48 million tonnes of copper. You will also make a stop at the ghost town of Oro City in California Gulch – one of the single richest placer gold strikes in Colorado, with estimated production of 120,000 to 150,000 troy ounces of gold. You will also experience breathtaking views of the Sawatch Mountain Range, including the 3 tallest mountains in the Rockies: Mt. Elbert, Mt. Massive, and Mt. Harvard, many mountains over 14,000 feet, and the Collegiate Peaks. There are many opportunities to stop for photos and to take in the rich mining history.

OUR SNOWMOBILES

Featured Point of Interest: Sawatch Mountain Range

Mount of the Holy Cross

“Sawatch” comes from the Ute word meaning “blue-green color,” or “waters of the blue earth.” This hundred mile mountain range located in central Colorado includes fifteen “14ers”, the highest concentration of such peaks in the U.S. The highest, 14,440-foot Mount Elbert, is the second-highest peak in the continental U.S. The Sawatch range is known for its vast aspen forests, barren mountain summits, many square miles of rarely visited backcountry wilderness, and a ranging network of trails for hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, or mountain biking.

This area’s rugged terrain is full of lakes, waterfalls, and wildflowers in spring and summer, and deep snowpacks in winter offer opportunities for adventure at high elevations. Erosion and glaciation have worn away the mountains to expose schist and gneiss, and the peaks of the Sawatch Range lack the great granite cliffs that characterize other ranges in the Colorado Rockies. As a result, most of the mountains of the Sawatch Range are gentle in contour despite their high elevation.

Top 10 peaks in the Sawatch Range

Mount Elbert (14,440 feet), Mount Massive (14,428 feet), Mount Harvard (14,421 feet), La Plata Peak (14,343 feet), Mount Antero (14,276 feet), Mount Princeton (14,204 feet), Mount Yale (14,202 feet), Mount of the Holy Cross (14,011 feet), Grizzly Peak (13,995 feet), Mount Ouray (13,961 feet)
